Wine Tasting at Hermau Winery

Since 2012, the Herman family has been dedicated to revitalizing the identity and history of vine cultivation in Valchiavenna.

They focus on Nebbiolo “Chiavennasca” and Gewurztraminer grapes, always cultivated organically, and have introduced Piwi varieties, producing Hermau wine with great respect for mountain viticulture.

Their winery offers three distinct labels: the classic method sparkling wine “Magy,” the red “Razént,” and the white “Orange,” aged on the skins. The Herman family also provides accommodations for a memorable experience in Valchiavenna at their agriturismo, nestled amidst the terraced vineyards of Pianazzola.

Traditional Lunch at the Crotti of Valchiavenna

Experience the unique tradition of “crotti” in Valchiavenna, private spaces formed by living rock walls where temperature-controlled air around 8°C allows for wine maturation and aging of cured meats, and cheeses. Some crotti now function as restaurants, offering authentic cuisine in a typical yet refined environment. The “Sagra dei Crotti” established in 1956 celebrates the importance of crotti and attracts visitors from different provinces of Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Grisons.

Admire the Marvelous Waterfalls of Acquafraggia

Located in Borgonuovo, the Acquafraggia Waterfalls originate from the “pizzo di Lago” at an altitude of 3050 meters, forming a series of waterfalls as they descend towards the valley floor. Leonardo da Vinci was impressed by their beauty and mentioned them in his “Codice Atlantico.” A path allows visitors to closely admire this natural spectacle, with a terrace offering a stunning view of the roaring waters.

Visit to the Soapstone Workshop

Soapstone craftsmanship, dating back to 3000 years, is one of the oldest artisanal activities in the Alps. Soapstone’s extraordinary properties include fire-resistance, excellent heat retention, non-stick cooking, and food preservation capabilities. The stone is used to produce “laveggi” pots, believed to neutralize poison during food preparation. Roberto Lucchinetti has revived this tradition at his soapstone workshop in Prosto. His “Atelier-museum” also features chalices replicating ancient shapes found in the ruins of Piuro and containers called “Furagn” used for preserving butter, animal fat, meat, and cheese. Additionally, visitors can explore his weaving workshop producing high-quality carpets and fabrics. Both artisan workshops are unique to the region and worth a visit.
