Description
Chiavenna is ideal for a day trip or weekend shared between history, nature and first-rate cuisine. Not that far from Milan, to the north of Lake Como positioned between the Maloja Pass and that of the Spluga. The historic centre is a perfect excuse for a wander along pedestrianised streets lined with shops selling local products and bars providing welcome aperitif.
Ambling through Chiavenna’s little ways is like going back in time, as far as the 16th century even, when many of the impressive mansions in and around the town were constructed. And don’t miss the “crotti”: small caverns created by landslides over the centuries through which air currents known as “sorel” breeze, making them ideal for the storage of cold cured meats and cheeses. Several of the crotti serve lunch/dinner or snacks of their own produce whilst others are open to the public only on special occasions. Typical would be the Sagra dei Crotti, a celebration held annually in September.
